Patti Scialfa, Musician Wife Of Bruce Springsteen, Reveals Blood Cancer Diagnosis

Patti Scialfa, musician and longtime wife of Bruce Springsteen, disclosed in a new documentary that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. 

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band premiered Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film features several interviews of the E Street Band members, including 71-year-old Scialfa, who joined the Band in 1984 as a singer and guitarist. 

For fans wondering why her public appearances have been so limited, she revealed in the documentary that with her diagnosis, touring has become a challenge for her. 

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” the singer said. 

Scialfa also explained that this is largely why she has remained absent from most of the 2023-2024 tour with Springsteen and the rest of the band.

“Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and can sing a few songs onstage. That’s been a treat,” Scialfa stated in the film. “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”

Since joining the band, Scialfa has been on almost every major Springsteen tour and has even released three solo albums: Rumble Doll, 23rd Street Lullaby and Play It as It Lays.

For eager viewers, the documentary will be released on October 25 on Hulu and Disney Plus. The film does not specify the current state of Scialfa’s illness.
