Dale Mooney, 53, a New England Patriots season ticket holder, was beaten to death by a rival Miami Dolphins fan on Sunday.
The incident took place in the 300-tier segment of Gillette Stadium.
Mooney, from Newmarket, New Hampshire, needed medical attention after a physical altercation between him and a Dolphins fan. Mooney was then brought to the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he died.
Joseph Kilmartin, a fan who witnessed the incident, described what happened to local TV station WCVB, “He basically grabbed another fan. They started tussling around for a few minutes. At one point, another fan walked over. He punched him … and the man just went out. It was pretty hard to watch.”
Dale’s wife, Lisa Mooney, also commented on the incident.
“I just don’t understand why people have to go to that extreme. Why can’t it just be fun? That’s all it’s supposed to be, a fun family event,” she said.
The Norfolk district’s attorney’s office has been assigned to the investigation by the Massachusetts State Police. The investigation is to follow normal protocol.
No charges have been currently filed. Dale’s autopsy is scheduled to take place in the coming days.
