Patrick Stewart was mistakenly outed as gay in a report about Ellen Page’s coming out at an Human Right’s Campaign event on Friday.

In a lengthy, supportive article about Page’s decision to come out – and in the manner in which she did so – The Guardian’s Jane Czyzselska wrote, "Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy because a high-profile and surprisingly politically aware young actress has decided not to play by the rules that so many closeted Hollywood actors are advised to follow if they are to enjoy mainstream success.”

The problem is, Patrick is not gay. In fact, Stewart married 35-year-old jazz singer Sunny Ozell in September of last year in Lake Tahoe. Stewart is, however, a known supporter of the LGBT community, and he did offer Page his support on Twitter.

After The Guardian story went viral, Stewart joked about his outing in a couple of tweets. “I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings,” the actor wrote in one post.

Perhaps Stewart's best friend is fellow British actor Sir Ian McClellan – who is an out gay man – with whom he's starring in The Cort Theatre’s production of Waiting for Godot. The chummy pair sported Jersey’s of the two opposing Super Bowl teams last month in a picture. They also posed together with Santa Clause and in front of the Rockefeller Christmas tree in matching black bowler hats around Christmastime, and with a turkey on Thanksgiving.

The Guardian has since amended the article in question and offered an explanation for the copy mistake. “This article was amended on 17 February 2014,” editors wrote. “The third paragraph originally said ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’. This should have read ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’.”
