‘Passion Of The Christ’ Sequel Teased By ‘Jesus’ Jim Caviezel

Mel Gibson is returning to the directorial spotlight with a sequel to his 2004 controversial faith epic The Passion of the Christ.

The Passion of the Christ 2 will see Jim Caviezel, 49, return as Jesus. The first film violently portrayed the crucifixion of Christ and was accused of being anti-Semitic, as Gibson has been in the past. The sequel will see Jesus return in the Resurrection.

Despite the controversies surrounding the first film, Passion holds the position of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time in the U.S. and made $611 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Gibson announced the sequel last year and Caviezel has confirmed his reprisal of Jesus. “There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience,” the devout Catholic actor told USA Today. “It’s great. Stay tuned.”

While Gibson and Caviezel have remained relatively tight-lipped about the project, the actor promises something great. “I won’t tell you how he’s going to go about it,” Caviezel said. “But I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good.”

In 2016, Gibson told USA Today about his plans for the sequel. “The Resurrection. Big subject. Oh, my God,” he said. “We’re trying to craft this in a way that’s cinematically compelling and enlightening so that it shines new light, if possible, without creating some weird thing.” Caviezel offered that Gibson was able to “crack” the new film. “Braveheart, that’s a film that took a long time to be able to crack,” the actor said. “The same thing for Passion. And the same thing for this. He’s finally got it. So that is coming.”

Since the original film came out in 2004, Caviezel hadn’t acted in another biblical film until this year. He plays Luke in Paul, Apostle of Christ alongside James Faulkner as Paul. The film hits theaters March 28.
