Paranormal Activity 3, the third installment of the ghost footage franchise in as many years, nabbed an impressive $54 million this weekend, Box Office Mojo reports. Earning more than last year's Paranormal Activity 2, which opened to $40.7 million, it also broke a new record for highest Fall opening ever (September and October), edging out Jackass 3D. The film's opening was also the highest-grossing of any horror movie to date.
Paranormal Activity 3's success meant bad news for other films opening this past weekend, including The Three Musketeers, Johnny English Reborn and The Mighty Macs, all of which came in under $10 million.
Last week's number one release, DreamWorks' Real Steel, fell to second place with $11.3 million, and Footloose rounded out the top three with $10.9 million.
