Cirque Du Soleil is taking another big bet on Broadway with its new show Paramour, which opened at the Lyric Theater on May 25. The plot revolves around mega director AJ (Jeremy Kushnier) who falls for his leading lady Indigo (Ruby Lewis) during a big-budget filming of, you guessed it, Paramour in Hollywood’s Golden Age. Problem is that she’s in love with the composer Joey (Ryan Vona). Inidgo and Joey keep their love secret while using the uber director to make her famous.
Director Philippe Decouflé works at full tilt to bring the acrobatic stylings of Crique Du Soleil to the more conventional Broadway musical form. Paramour is at its best when it goes full cirque. A scene where twin brothers brothers (Andrew and Kevin Atherton) soar over the audience had the crowd roaring with approval. In another scene that seems to be re-booting Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, acrobats take turns launching off a seesaw – sometimes so high that they aren’t visible to the audience masked by the top of the proscenium.

While the show could do with more crique and a little less Broadway, Paramour offers an interesting hybrid that seems likely to mature during a long Broadway run. The three stars acquit themselves ably, but the real star of Paramour are the thrilling acrobats.
