A shade of purple made in Prince‘s honor has been announced by the late rocker’s estate.
Pantone Color Institute created the hue, called “Love Symbol #2,” in tribute to the singer’s custom Yamaha piano and graphic he began using as his name in 1993.
“We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one,'” said Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute, in a statement. “A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”
Troy Carter, entertainment advisor to Prince’s estate, added, “The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever.”
Prince died of an accidental overdose in 2016 at age 57. His last album, Hit n Run Phase Two, was released in 2015. The color announcement comes just months after the release of the 30th anniversary deluxe edition of Prince’s iconic album Purple Rain. And in February, Prince’s music was added to streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music for the first time.
