Paczki Day, the Polish celebration of Fat Tuesday, served as the date for President Barack Obama’s first State of the Union Address of the second term of his presidency.
While Paczki Day is predominately celebrated in its native Poland, it’s also observed with relative enthusiasm in both Hamtramck, Mich., and Chicago. Although Obama is not a native of Chicago, nor does he practice the Catholic religion, it would be hard to believe the former Illinois senator had never indulged in the title pastries – paczki. “As a Chicagoan, Obama should acknowledge that his hometown holds the Fattest Tuesday in America, either by teaching the rest of the country to pronounce paczki or simply by eating paczki throughout his speech,” claimed NBC Chicago’s Edward McClelland.
Unfortunately, Obama failed to make reference to Paczki Day or eat the decadent treat during his State of the Union Address. Yet, as the history books will show, Paczki Day marks a great accomplishment in Obama’s political career. It was on that fateful day in 2008 that he proved to the country he was a contender, winning 13 primaries to Hillary Clinton’s 10 on Super Tuesday.
Obama is the first President since George Washington to give a State of the Union Address on Paczki Day.
