Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe in 'Outlander'
The first trailer for season three of the STARZ time-travel drama Outlander was released Tuesday and gives great insight into what the season has in store.
Outlander, based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon, tells the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), an English World War II nurse who is sent back in time, away from her family, in 1945. To her surprise, she ends up in the 18th century during a pivotal moment in English/Scottish history and ends up playing a big role. Prevented from going home, she starts a life in the past and falls in love with – and is impregnated by – Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Meanwhile, her 20th century husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) waits for her.
The third season of the show, based on the third novel of the series Voyager, finds Claire back in the 20th century with Frank. Their relationship is rocky, primarily because Claire wants to go back to the 18th century and be with Jamie.
The trailer shows that back in the 18th century Jamie has been imprisoned for his involvement in the Battle of Culloden, in which Scotland is defeated by England.
In the 20th century, Claire pours over records trying to find Jamie’s name in the records, hoping to find that he is still alive.
Outlander season three premieres on STARZ on September 10.
