‘Outlander’ Sam Heughan Reveals He’s Been Bullied Over Gay Rumors & COVID Precautions

Sam Heughan has opened up about being bullied since taking the Starz role on Outlander in a Twitter post on Thursday. He revealed he has endured “six years of constant bullying, harassment, stalking and false narrative” by – what he says are – “professionals who should know better.”

His tweet read:

“I am at a loss, upset, hurt and have to speak out. It’s affecting my lif, mental state and is a daily concern. My costars, friends, family, myself, in fact I’m associated with, has been subjected to personal slurs, shaming, abuse, death threats, stalking, sharing private information and vile, false narrative.”

Heughan claims he had no choice but to eventually reveal the abuse after six years because he had hoped “these bullies would just go away.”

He continued:

“Recently, these false claims vary from me manipulating fans, being a closet-homosexual, trying to mislead or exhort fans for money and disregarding Covid advice,” he wrote. “I’ve done non [sic] of the above.”

The attacks regarding COVID-19 derive from to his decision to stay in Hawaii while filming on location during the outbreak. Heughan said he traveled there before the ban and prior to the peak of the virus.

“Upon the advice of everyone I trust, I decided to remain in a safe environment,” he wrote. “It was a good decision. I am safe, isolated, putting no one at risk and am not a burden to the locals.”

In addressing the attacks of stalking and hacking his information, the actor wrote:

“I’m so hurt by this. As an actor in these time, we feel impotent. We can’t do much but I have tried to use what leverage I have to provide a voice to charities that need it and hopefully a little entertainment or light relief. For those still unhappy I suggest you unfollow.”

He concluded his post by thanking his fans and supporters.

“I’m so grateful, from the bottom of my heart. Stay safe and please be kind to yourself and each other.”

His post prompted more support when the hashtag #WeStandWithSam began trending on social media. Outlander fan accounts have also shown support.
