The South Korean film Parasite made history at the Oscars on Sunday as the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture.
“I feel like I’ll wake up to find this all a dream, it all feels very surreal,” said director Bong Joon Ho.
The thriller also took home three other awards for Best International Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. With a total of four Oscars, it won more than any other film. In second place was the film 1917, which won three Oscars in cinematography, sound mixing, and visual effects.
The film deals with class warfare and discrimination in a way that some have called a dark comedy, and others have called a mystery.
This win comes after 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite trend, and the Academy’s subsequent push for diversity. In 2016, the Academy came under fire after all of its acting nominees were white for two years straight. The Academy promised to double its women and minority voting memberships by this year. Eighty-four percent of Academy members were white according to a recent study published earlier this month by The Hollywood Reporter. This win for Parasite may have seemed like a total win for diversity, but critics point out that this year the Academy only nominated one woman of color in the acting categories, and no women for Best Director.
The show did try to show its aim of diversity in other ways though. For the first time ever, a woman, Eimear Noone, conducted the 42-piece orchestra.
“I think looking at creating a safe space and encouraging people to get back up when they fall down I think across the arts, in general, be it a female conductor, directors, whatever — I think we need more of that kind of thinking,” she told NPR in an interview.
Natalie Portman wore a cape on the red carpet featuring the embroidered names of female directors. Plus, Janelle Monáe and Mark Ruffalo shouted out female directors during their presentations.
While accepting the award for Best Picture, Parasite producer Kwak Sin Ae put the win this way:
“I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”
