Oscars 2017 Funny Moments: Tourists Visit Ceremony, Mean Tweets, Kimmel Tweets At Trump

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel surprised a group full of Hollywood bus tourists by hiring a tour guide to bring the unsuspecting guests to Sunday night’s Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The 49-year-old late-night host led the tourists, who believed they were headed to an exhibit, through the audience of famous faces. One couple, who said they were engaged, named two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington as their favorite actor, and Washington jokingly officiated their wedding on the spot by serving as a faux-priest.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife. Kiss the bride,” Washington said.

Several of the overjoyed tourists shook hands and met with many of the A-list celebrities sitting, including Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Octavia Spencer and Ryan Gosling.

“This is Ryan Gosling. He’s very handsome. Don’t look into his eyes,” Kimmel warned. “We have Emma Stone and her brother, Spencer. Emma brought her brother.”

Kimmel chimed in: “He’s Denzel, so it’s legal. There’s Jennifer Aniston andJustin Theroux. Jen, do you have a wedding gift for them? Maybe you can give them something from your purse. Justin, you give them something, too, will you? How about the sunglasses, Jen? You don’t need those, it’s dark.” Aniston gave the sunglasses to the woman, who put them on.

The audience seemed to love the bit, and viewers at home did too. “Um, I’m seeing my friend Yulree Chun on the Oscars RIGHT NOW,” one person tweeted about their friend who was on the tour double-decker bus. “Her Instagram is about to be really dope. #Oscars.”

One other funny moment was when Kimmel tweeted at President Donald Trump about two hours into the show after sarcastically expressing concern over the fact that Trump hadn’t yet tweeted any complaints or angry comments. Kimmel was likely expressing surprise at the President’s silence after many of the speeches throughout the night had turned political and preached messages of inclusion of immigrants who have been spurned by Trump, notably Mexicans and Muslims.

Kimmel set a personal record when he used his smartphone to tweet ‘Hey @realDonaldTrump, u up?’ to the President onstage, in the middle of the show. His tweet was retweeted over 208,000 times. Ellen DeGeneres’s group selfie filled with celebrities at the 2014 Oscars broke a record with 3.2 million retweets.

Kimmel also sent Trump another tweet that only included the hashtag #Merylsayshi, again poking fun at Streep’s repeated takedown of the President that led Trump to call her ‘overrated.’

Finally, a special Oscars edition of ‘Mean Tweets–‘ a recurring segment on Kimmel’s late-night show where celebrities read nasty tweets about them from fans. Most of the actors and singers in this edition were either nominees or cast members of this year’s Oscar-nominated movies, as well as many of this year’s presenters.
