Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes took home the Oscar for Best Original Song, “Writing’s On The Wall” in the movie Spectre and during his acceptance speech, Smith dedicated his win to the entire gay community.
“I actually can’t breathe right now,” said a bewildered Smith as he took a deep breathe with his hands on his knees. “To all the nominees you are incredible, Gaga you are incredible.”
He continued: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar and if this is the case and even it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and hope one day we can all stand as equals. Thank you so much.”
This was their first nomination and first win for an Oscar.
ABC Network tweeted, the win and captioned it, “@samsmithworld & @jimmynapes win the Oscar for Best Original Song! Watch this Music Moment Thx2 @ATT!”
