After winning his first Oscar Sunday night for Original Song, Sam Smith decided to dedicate his win to the LGBT community in his acceptance speech saying he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar. He also inserted a misread quote from Sir Ian McKellan. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was quick to make sure the singer knew he was incorrect in his statement.
Smith’s acceptance speech had a wonderful intent but the facts were wrong: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. If this is the case — even if it isn’t the case — I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”
Smith was unaware that many members of the gay and lesbian community have won an Oscar but McKellen was only referring to the Best Actor category.
When addressing Smith, Black tweeted, “If you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé,” he tweeted along with his 2008 acceptance speech.
Black is engaged to British Olympic diver Tom Daley.
The writer, director and activist later addressed the Twitter community by tweeting, “THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us.”
McKellen has also chimed in on the speech given by Smith by tweeting, “I’d said no openly gay actor had received #Oscars-that doesn’t detract from @samsmithworld achievement. Congratulations to him & all others!”
Smith has yet to make any comment on his social media.
