The 87th Academy Awards honored the best in movie making Sunday night inside Hollywood’s Kodak Theater.
Birdman, which stars Michael Keaton as an actor looking to make a comeback with a turn on the Broadway stage, earned the Best Picture Oscar. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Best Director Oscar, as well as the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Keaton, though nominated in the Best Actor in a Leading Role Category, left empty handed.
Eddie Redmayne was the actor who beat Keaton for the Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. For her turn as a woman suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s in Still Alice, Julianne Moore picked up the Best Actress in a Leading Role trophy.
Whiplash star J.K. Simmons was awarded the Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar, while Boyhood’s Patricia Arquette nabbed the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar.
Though the Grand Budapest Hotel lost out on Best Picture, the Wes Anderson film earned awards for Original Score, Costume Design and Production Design. Picking up the lone award for Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch, was writer Graham Moore for Best Adapted Screenplay. American Sniper was also shut out expect for one, as the film received an award for Film Editing.
