Oscar Pistorius Update: Paralympian To Be Sentenced For Girlfriend’s Murder In June

Oscar Pistorius, the South African gold medal-winning Paralympian and Olympian, will be sentenced for killing girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp in June.

Oscar Pistorius Sentencing

Pistorius will learn his sentence in mid-June. “The matter is postponed to the 13th of June 2016,” high court Judge Aubrey Ledwaba explained of the final sentencing. “It will be heard until the 17th of June 2016.”

Pistorius had been initially serving a five-year sentence for Steenkamp’s murder on a charge of manslaughter. The sentence was upgraded to murder just as the house arrest portion of the sentencing was to take effect. On the new charge, Pistorius faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in jail.

As a court ruled that Pistorius has exhausted all legal options, he will not be permitted to appeal the decision.

Pistorius, who has been staying at his uncle’s property as he awaits his sentencing, was apparently hospitalized over the weekend. Pistorius family spokesperson Anneliese Burgess declined to go into detail about the alleged hospital visit.

“I have spoken to the family and they don’t want to talk about it,” Burgess said. “They see it as a private matter and won’t be commenting.

Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Throughout the highly publicized trial, Pistorius maintained that he had shot through the bathroom door in his Pretoria home, mistaking Steenkamp for an intruder. Part of Pistorius’ defense was that the Olympian felt vulnerable, as he did not have his prosthetic legs on at the time. The prosecution, however, painted Pistorius as a jealous boyfriend with a short fuse who purposely shot to kill Steenkamp.
