Oscar Pistorius, whose trial for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is currently in recess, took to Twitter for the first time since the anniversary of her death on Feb. 14 with messages about love, pain and the brokenhearted.
On Sunday, Pistorius tweeted Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”
Later on Sunday, Pistorius tweeted a picture of a passage from Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl’s book Man’s Search for Meaning. “I understood how a man who has nothing left in this world still may know bliss, be it only for a moment, in the contemplation of his beloved,” part of the passage reads.
Pistorius then tweeted a prayer on Monday, which states, “Lord, today I ask that you bathe those who live in pain in the river of your healing. Amen.”
Throughout his trial in South Africa, Pistorius – a double-amputee Olympic runner – has maintained that when he shot and killed Steenkamp, who was behind a locked bathroom door, he mistook her for an intruder. He has testified that he had loved Steenkamp, though he admitted he never got the chance to tell her so. Pistorius was often pictured in tears and vomiting into a bucket while the prosecution presented its case against him.
If the prosecution, which has argued Pistorius knowingly shot his girlfriend in a fit of rage after an argument, convinces Judge Thokozile Masipa to find Pistorius guilty, the athlete is looking at 25 years in prison. South Africa does not have the death penalty.
