Oscar 2016 Nominations: ‘The Revenant’ Leads With 12 Nods

The 88th Annual Academy Award nominations were announced early Thursday morning in Los Angeles.

Leading the nominations for the 2016 Oscars is The Revenant, which earned 12 nods total. Unsurprisingly the movie was nominated for Best Picture, its star, Leonardo DiCaprio, picked up another Best Actor nomination, Tom Hardy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Alejandro González Iñárrito was nominated for Best Direction. The Revenant was also nominated for Costume Design, Makeup and Hair Styling, Sound Editing, Film Editing, Production Design and Visual Effects.

Joining The Revenant in the Best Picture category are Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room and Spotlight. And, joining DiCaprio in the Best Actor category are Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl). Best Actress nods went to Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn).

In addition to Hardy, Christian Bale (The Big Short), Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) are up for Best Supporting Actor Oscars. Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) received Best Supporting Actress nominations.

Ińárritu will be trying for his second Best Director Oscar in so many years against Adam McKay (The Big Short), George Miller (Mad Mad: Fury Road), Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Tom McCarthy (Spotlight).

The 88th Annual Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 28. The show, which will be hosted by Chris Rock, will air live on ABC at 7 p.m. EST.
