Orlando Bloom has been “dragged” into a trial between his fiancé, pop star Katy Perry, and the family of a veteran who say they were forced to leave their Montecito, California, mansion so she could buy it.
The trial is set to begin on Feb. 25. Bloom was served with a subpoena from the family on Thursday and must testify in the damages phase of a years-long trial. The trial is set to begin on Feb. 25.
In 2020, Carl Westcott, 85, sold Perry his mansion, but within days claimed he was under the influence of painkillers when he made the final decision and tried to go back on the deal. When he was denied, he launched a lawsuit against Perry that he didn’t have the mental wherewithal to sign the estate over.
The 9,000-square-foot estate sits on a 2.5-acre lot, with tennis courts, a pool and two guesthouses. The mansion, set in the Santa Ynez foothills, is contains eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.
In November 2023, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that Westcott did not have enough evidence to prove he lacked the mental acuity to sign away the house at the time and sided with Perry. Rather than end the legal battle, Perry chose to sue Westcott for the excessive repairs the estate required and claimed she should be reimbursed $6 million. Perry will have to present evidence of the alleged damages to a California judge.
Since Perry bought the home from Westcott for $11.25 million four years ago, the value of the property has gone up to $15 million.
Westcott, a veteran, is currently bedridden, dying of Huntington’s disease. His family asserts that the stress of the demanding trial is ruining his final days.
In October 2020, just months after Perry bought the estate, she purchased another home in the affluent Montecito area, home to many Hollywood A-listers including Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry.
