Orange is the New Black episode “A Tittin’ and a Hairin'” delved back into Doggett’s past, while in the present she’s trying to navigate her relationship with Coates while other Litchfield relationships take a turn for the worst.
When Doggett (Taryn Manning) was just 11, she got her period for the first time. Her mother reassured her that she wasn’t dying and that, on the bright side, she now had “value” when it came to men. With her newfound desirability, Doggett’s mom disturbingly advised her, “Best thing is to go on and let them do their business baby.” In her teens, Doggett would let guys have sex with her in exchange for some soda, but she quit the degrading practice when met a nice new guy from out of town, and is surprised to find that he truly likes her. Unfortunately, he ends up having to move because of his father’s drunkenness, and she winds up being raped at the hands of one of her old customers.
In the present, Doggett is avoiding Coates (James McMenamin) after things took a decidedly creepy turn while they were feeding geese on one of their van runs. Coates apologizes for how things went, but suggests that there’s a possibility that she’s as into him as he’s into her. Coates tells Doggett that he truly likes her, and she accepts his apology and his t-shirt filled with doughnuts. Out in the yard later, Doggett confides in Big Boo (Lea DeLaria) about how much she likes the new guard.

Meanwhile, Alex (Laura Prepon) confronts Lolly (Lori Petty) about her notebook, and suggests that she’s trying to kill her. When Donaldson (Brendan Burke) comes over, Alex shows him the notebook. Lolly plays dumb, and pulls out another notebook, claiming that the one Alex showed Donaldson was her own. He believes Lolly and gives Alex two shots. Alex goes to seek out Piper (Taylor Schillling), only to find her celebrating the recruitment of Maritza (Diane Guerrero), Flaca (Jackie Cruz) and Maria (Jessica Pimentel) with Stella (Ruby Rose). Later on, she walks in on them again, this time they’re chatting on Piper’s bunk. After Alex storms off, Piper starts making out with Stella, which Red (Kate Mulgrew) spots before thinking better of going back to their cube.
After walking away, Alex headed to the bathroom, where she once again bumps into Lolly. She wants Lolly to come clean about why she’s been tracking all of her movements and then lying about it. Feeling threatened, Lolly wields a massive shard of glass, leading Alex to throw her down and pin her, demanding to know if Kubra sent her. When Lolly starts rambling about the NSA, Alex realizes that Lolly might be mentally ill.
In another Litchfield bathroom, Mendoza (Selenis Leyva) confronts Sophia (Laverne Cox), putting her on blast for refusing to allow Benny to carpool with Michael when it was really Michael who was the instigator of the fight that saw him arrested. Mendoza bumps Sophia and then goes into a diatribe about how Sophia doesn’t really know what it means to be a mother. She takes it a step further saying Sophia “ain’t nothin’ real.” At that, Sophia loses her cool and shoves Mendoza, who smacks her head on the wall. Sophia, shocked at what she’d done, apologizes profusely.
Both Suzanne (Uzo Aduba) and Morello (Yael Stone) are on the verge of romance – Suzanne with her admiring fan and Morello with her frequent visitor named Vinny. While cleaning the floors together, Suzanne tells Morello about her new potential love interest and also confesses that she’s still a virgin. Morello gives her some basic advice and then goes to meet with her man Vinny. When Vinny tells her that he’d gladly protect her from anything, Morello gets an idea. Before you know it, Vinny is heading over to Christopher’s house with some of his buddies to beat him up.
Doggett, who is back to trusting Coates, heads out to get ice scream with him. When he gets back, he’s summoned to Caputo’s office for a reprimand for missing the count for the third time in two weeks. As a result, Coates is put on official probation, which means he’s in danger of getting fired. Incensed, he goes and finds Doggett and blames her for getting put on probation. Coates, taking his alarming behavior to a new level, throws Doggett down on the backseat of the van and rapes her.
