Oprah Winfrey delivered one of the most impassioned speeches at the Golden Globes this Sunday, accepting her award for her contributions to the film world. So good that many are calling for the longstanding television personality to run for president.
Seth Meyer’s monologue opened the event with a joke about the popular hostess potentially running, and it gained traction as the event went on. Her acceptance speech only furthered the audience’s interest in the possibility, and Winfrey’s partner Stedman Graham told the Los Angeles Times that it is “up to the people. She would absolutely do it.” Winfrey’s close friend Gayle King shared his position, adding, “I thought that speech was incredible. I got goosebumps.”
2020 is still far off, and Sunday’s speech was not a declaration of her intention to run. However, many of the other people in attendance were just as inspired by her performance. Winfrey even picked up her first endorsement in Meryl Streep, who told The Washington Post, “She launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president. I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”
