One Direction has officially gone on hiatus, and the British boy band members have thanked fans for their support during their first five years as a group.
One Direction – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Nial Horan and Liam Payne – held their final performance together ahead of their hiatus on the UK X Factor Sunday night. The group kicked off their performance with their latest single, “Infinity.” Following the number, their former mentor on the show, Simon Cowell, and others featured in a tribute video for the group.
“It’s been a privilege, it’s been fun. Enjoy the break and I’ll always be there,” Cowell said.
One Direction also received farewell shoutouts from fellow X Factor group Little Mix, comedian James Corden and soccer star David Beckham.
“Boys, what can I say. Five years and you have given so much to so many people. You are unbelievably talented but more importantly unbelievably nice guys,” Beckham said. “You need to come back soon or you’re going to have more videos like that.”
Following the emotional night, the singers took to Twitter to thank their fans for their support over the years.
“To you, you have changed our lives and no words will ever be good enough to thank you for what we have done together,” Styles wrote. “You are the greatest team mates we have ever known. Thank you.”
“Well that was an emotional night !! Never can we thank you enough for how special you have made the last five years for us!” Tomlinson wrote. “Hope you realise what we have all done together really is incredible. You guys have made us what we are today! We’ll be back soon enough!”
“Honestly thank you so much to everyone look at all the amazing things we have done together,” Payne tweeted. “I’m just walking round sainsburys doing my god shopping and life couldn’t be better ??? thank you all.”
Horan wrote, “5 of the best years of our lives so far.. Thank you all so much for your incredible support .I hope you guys realise what you’ve done for us,” adding, “Can’t thank you enough to be honest … Don’t worry , we’ll be back .. Looking forward to chilling for a while now.”
While One Direction – minus founding member Zayn Malik – promises to return one day in the future, the band hasn’t stated when it plans to reunite.
