The five Olympic rings became four after one of the rings failed to open at the opening ceremonies for Sochi 2014, signifying the beginning of the Winter Games.
In keeping with the high-tech imagery utilized by host country Russia in the Olympics kick-off event, the ring unveiling was meant to wow. Five illuminated snowflakes took to the skies, settling near the top of Fisht Arena. Once there, the snowflakes began to transform into interloping rings – all but one.
If the stunt had gone as planned, the five conjoined rings were to explode into pyrotechnics. Since the fifth ring failed to cooperate, the lights were shifted out of sight.
While most of the world, including the U.S., saw the ring mishap, Russian TV viewers saw the impressive intended display. Broadcaster Rossiya 1 edited in the more successful rehearsal footage once they noticed the fifth snowflake failing to change its shape.
