Olympic Closing Ceremony: K-Pop & Pandas Close Out PyeongChang 2018 [VIDEO]

The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, finished up last night with a fun and quirky closing ceremony.

OLYMPIC CLOSING CEREMONY RECAP

The ceremony began with a group of roller skaters taking the stage and pantomiming various Olympic sports, as colors changed and radiated beneath them. The South Korean national anthem played next, with a lovely interlude by a children’s choir. More music was performed throughout the evening, including a bizarre rock concert with instruments unfamiliar in the western world.

Singer CL sang her single, “The Baddest Female,” and got the crowd of 35,000 people on their feet to dance. “She is ferocious,” said commentator Johnny Weir, who added his voice to the NBC broadcast alongside Tara Lipinski and Terry Gannon.

The Olympic athletes who remained in South Korea for the duration of the games then took a victory lap around the arena. They came in their country uniforms and waving their flags, with some performing athletic feats as they did so.

The six final medals of the games were then awarded in the huge stadium – cross-country skiers Marit Bjoergen of Norway, Krista Parkakoski of Finland and Stina Nilsson of Sweden accepted their respective gold, silver and bronze medals for the women’s 30 km mass start, while Finland’s Iivo Niskanen, Russia’s Alexander Bolshunov and Russia’s Andrey Larkov were awarded their medals for the same men’s 50 km mass start.

Finally, the Olympic flag and torch were passed on to Beijing, where the 2022 Winter Games will take place. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee said goodbye to PyeongChang saying, “the Olympic Games are an homage to the past and an act of faith for the future. With your joint march, you have shared your faith in a peaceful future with all of us,” he continued. “You have shown our sport brings people together in our very fragile world. You have shown how sport builds bridges.”

South Korean president Moon Jae-in, U.S. first daughter Ivanka Trump and senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol shared a box at the closing ceremony. There was no apparent communication between Trump and Kim throughout the event.

Chinese performers then offered a teaser of what we can expect four years from now, complete with sparkling panda bears. Following this, the Olympics officially ended for 2018, with a performance by K-pop boy band EXO. Everyone in attendance danced as fireworks played over head.
