Olivia Wise, Cancer-Stricken Teen Who Covered 'Roar,' Dies At 16

Olivia Wise, the Toronto teen who recorded a viral cover of Katy Perry’s “Roar” while battling cancer, died on Monday. She was 16.

Olivie Wise Covered 'Roar' Battling Cancer

Wise was first diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in January 2012 after suffering a seizure, and earlier this year, she learned that she’d exhausted all treatment options. The exhuberant teen took the news in stride and graciously took the opportunity to record her anthem “Roar.”

"Olivia is a fighter and has gone through the fire," her cousin Jeff wrote in the YouTube video caption. "In fact, she was going through the fire while she recorded this song, but you wouldn't know it, because she was dancing right through it."

Upon hearing Wise’s cover of her song, Perry responded with a video of her own in which she said, “I love you and a lot of people love you, and that's why your video got to me and moved everybody that saw it. I just wanted to send you some love and some light and tell you that I’m thinking about you. Thank you so much. Keep roaring.”

Olivia Wise Loses Brain Cancer Fight

Wise’s death was confirmed by her mother, who says her daughter would have wanted people to celebrate her life and not mourn her death. She added, “[Olivia] died peacefully in her home surrounded by the extraordinary love of her family," according to a family statement sent to CNN.

“To tell the truth, her diagnosis didn't change her personality,” her mom said. “It only enhanced it… Even in the most difficult moments, she managed to bring laughter and friendship to all that were caring for her.”
