Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey is at risk of losing a $40 million sponsorship deal with Australian cereal brand Weet-Bix due to an NBA investigation into allegations of Giddey having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl.
Giddey, 21, has been removed from the company’s social media accounts. A spokesperson for Sanitarium Health Food Company, owner of Weet-Bix, said that the company has yet to completely cut ties with Giddey.
“We are obviously aware of the news surrounding Josh Giddey and are waiting for facts to be confirmed,” he told Code Sports. “We are in contact with Josh’s management team and waiting on further details at this point.”
Allegations of Giddey’s relationship with the minor surfaced on social media on Wednesday night. Giddey had no comment when asked about it at a press conference on Friday.
“I understand the question obviously but there is no further comment right now,” the basketball player said. “I get the questions guys, I completely understand you guys want to know about it, but for right now I don’t have anything to say.”
“Personal matter, and I have no comment on it,” he continued. “And that will be my answer to anything related.”
According to Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, Giddey will still be in the lineup for future games.
“Available to play. Will play,” Daigneault said about Giddey. “No change in status from a basketball standpoint. Still, I have no comment on anything else.”
“Just with the information that we have at this point, that’s the decision that we’ve made. It’s really not even a decision, to be honest with you,” he continued. “It’s obviously a league matter at this point, the ball’s in their court on that.”
