Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) is encouraging residents to get their COVID-19 vaccine shots by giving them the chance to win $1 million. Ohio residents will automatically be eligible to win the prize as soon as they get their first dose of the vaccine.
DeWine is also encouraging children and teenagers who plan to attend a four-year university in the state of Ohio for the chance to win a full scholarship.
To win either of the prizes, participants must be residents of the state.
DeWine informed Ohio residents via Twitter that the first winners will be announced on May 26.
“We will announce a winner of a drawing for adults who have received at least their for the vaccine. The announcement will occur each Wednesday for five weeks and the (winners) … will receive one million dollars,” DeWine tweeted.
Participants eligible to win the money must be at least 18 years of age and already vaccinated “before the drawing.”
The process will be the same for the scholarships; winners will be announced every Wednesday for five weeks; people ages 17 and under are eligible to win the scholarship.
DeWine assured residents that the money being used will come from already “existing federal Coronavirus Relief Funds.”
Though some criticized the decision, DeWine believes that the contest is not a waste of money.
“The real waste at this point in the pandemic – when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it – is a life lost to COVID-19,” he said.
