Octomom Nadya Suleman Pleads No Contest To Welfare Fraud Charges

Nadya Suleman, better known as Octomom, pleaded no contest in court Monday, where she faced welfare fraud and three other charges.

Ocotmom Pleads No Contest

Suleman, 39, took a plea deal, agreeing to plead no contest in order to avoid jail time, reported the Los Angeles Times. Instead, the mother of 14 will serve two years probation and perform 200 hours of community service, according to the Los Angeles Country district attorney’s office.

During the first half of 2013, Suleman received welfare payments while failing to note $30,000 in earnings – some of which came from her sex tape/masturbation video. “While applying for public aid, the mother of 14 children allegedly failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos,” read a statement by Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey from earlier this year.

When Suleman appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are They Now? special, she openly discussed her decision to get into the adult film and stripping industries. According to Suleman, who shot to notoriety after becoming the second woman in U.S. history to successfully birth octuplets, she merely wanted to have a way to support her large brood.

“Years after I had the babies — the octuplets — my manager and I collaborated together on doing an independent, um, self-pleasure video,” Suleman told Oprah, speaking of the X-rated Octomom Home Alone. “I did it, obviously, to provide for my family," Suleman said. "I don't regret it. I actually . . . Shockingly enough, it became one of the most liberating and empowering things I had ever done."

Since the charges were levied at her in January of this year, Suleman has paid the California Department of Health Care Services and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services back more that $26,000 for the financial aid she’d wrongfully collected.
