‘Oceans’ Director Steven Soderbergh Tapped To Produce The Oscars

The famed director behind the Oceans trilogy, Steven Soderbergh, will be among three high-profile Hollywood filmmakers who will produce the 93rd Annual Academy Awards in 2021. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose Soderbergh along with Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher to produce the event.

Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson expressed their delight at the selections of Soderbergh, Collins and Sher in a joint statement. “The upcoming Oscars is the perfect occasion for innovation and for re-envisioning the possibilities for the awards show. This is a dream team who will respond directly to these times,” said the executives. “The Academy is excited to work with them to deliver an event that reflects the worldwide love of movies and how they connect us and entertain us when we need them the most.”

The trio released a statement of their own that read, “We’re thrilled and terrified in equal measure. Because of the extraordinary situation we’re all in, there’s an opportunity to focus on the movies and the people who make them in a new way, and we hope to create a show that really feels like the movies we all love.”

This news comes as one of the first positive announcements following the ceremony’s two-month postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rubin said in a statement, “Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control.”
