Barack Obama spoke to John Stewart about his record in the White House on The Daily Show
President Barack Obama sat down with Jon Stewart once more on The Daily Show to talk about what he’s managed to get done thus far in his presidency and what he plans to do before leaving office.
“I can’t believe you’re leaving before me,” Obama told Stewart, who will be making his Daily Show exit Aug. 6. “In fact, I’m issuing a new executive order that Jon Stewart cannot leave the show,” Obama joked, adding that it was already “being challenged in the courts.”
When Stewart took the opportunity with the president as his guest to ask about how he’s feeling in the final stretch of his presidency, Obama conceded that he feels as though “I finally know what I’m doing,” and that there is still “a bunch of other things we want to get done.”.
As for those who’ve criticized Obama for a lack of action and initiative throughout his presidency, Obama says that things are just now getting done that he’s been working on throughout his years as POTUS.
“I do think the work we did early starts bearing fruit later,” he said, referring to the Iran deal. “It just so happens that people are seeing the work we did when we first came in — so Iran … [it] took four or five years to get them to the table.”
As for reforming the Veterans Affairs medical system, Obama said that it was “entirely fair” to say that his administration failed to keep to their five-year plan. However, he thinks that they’ve made significant headway in fixing the broken program.
“Government works better now than it probably ever has given what we ask it to do. People work hard in the VA. But if you have a government that was built on 1930 models and it’s not updated for decades, there will be a gap in terms of what it is doing now relative to what other folks do,” Obama explained. “It is the biggest example of that — we are redesigning from soup to nuts.”
There was also a moment during the interview where Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump came up. The real estate mogul and reality TV personality has enjoyed inexplicable popularity in the polls, which Obama seemed to think wasn’t terribly thrilling for the party’s base.
“I’m sure the Republicans are enjoying Mr. Trump’s dominance of their primary,” Obama joked.
