Obama & Trump Laugh During Friendly Exchange At Jimmy Carter’s Funeral After Trump Rails Against Flag Flying At Half-Mast

All five living presidents, Joe BidenDonald TrumpBarack ObamaGeorge W. Bush and Bill Clinton, past and current, reunited to honor 39th President Jimmy Carter at his funeral in the Washington National Cathedral, Washington D.C., on Jan 9.

Carter was born on Oct. 1, 1924, and died at 100 in his home in Plains, Georgia, on Dec 29, 2024, as the oldest living president. Biden declared Jan 9 a national day of mourning, giving most federal workers the day off. In honor of Carter’s death, all federal buildings’ American flags were ordered to be at half-staff. They will continue for 30 days after his death, including Trump’s Jan 20 inauguration.

Without former First Lady Michelle Obama by his side, Obama greeted the former presidents and vice presidents with a hello. Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, did not stand to return the gesture, as the two presidents have had previous bitter clashes, especially during the 2024 Presidential election.

Then, in a rare civil moment, Obama sat beside Trump and Melania, and Trump sparked a conversation with his political foe.

In a photo, Obama is seen laughing while speaking with Trump, displaying civility that seems rare in a polarizing political climate.

Carter served as a one-term president between 1977 and 1981. He was known for his decades-long humanitarian efforts, including meditating a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel in 1978 and winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Trump expressed his displeasure about the half-staffed flag on Jan. 3 in a Truth Social post, “The Democrats are all ‘giddy; about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration. They think it’s so great and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country; they only think about themselves. Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” he continued. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
