On Thursday, former NFL player and actor OJ Simpson died from cancer. Simpson made headlines in 1994 for the nine-month-long trial in which Simpson was acquitted of murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in the so-called “trial of the century” after physical evidence pointed to Simpson’s guilt.
Years later, in 2007, Simpson was arrested on a robbery and kidnapping charge against a memorabilia dealer in Las Vegas. Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison but was released on parole in 2017, then officially released in 2021.
Simpson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2023 and underwent chemotherapy treatment. In 2024, days before Simpson’s passing, his children, whom he shared with Brown, were reportedly made to sign non-disclosure agreements along with other members of his family. No deathbed confession from Simpson was reported by anyone who saw him in his last days.
News of Simpson’s death received international coverage. In their initial obituary, the Los Angeles Times incorrectly reported former President Donald Trump had been released from prison instead of Simpson. The obituary has since been corrected, but the Times was accused of “wishful thinking” by online critics.
“Long before the city woke up on a fall morning in 2017, Trump walked out of Lovelock Correctional Center outside Reno, a free man for the first time in nine years,” the paper wrote.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, “Our thoughts are with his families during this difficult time, obviously with his family and loved ones. I know they have asked for some privacy and so we’re going to respect that. I’ll just leave it there.”
