O.J. Simpson’s lawyer has confirmed that “Mr. Simpson is a completely free man now,” after the former football legend was released from parole effective Dec. 1.
Simpson was famously acquitted for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson her friend Ron Goldman, though he was later served a $33.5 million judgment in civil court after the victims’ families filed a civil suit against him.
He was later arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping. He was convicted of the crimes in 2008 and served his sentence at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada until he was granted parole on July 20, 2017.
Simpson has not made an immediate comment on his plans for the future. He told his parole officials he planned to move to Florida before his 2017 release, but has instead remained in Nevada and moved to a gated community.
On his Twitter account @TheRealOJ32, Simpson frequently uploads videos, usually commentating on college and professional Football. He also reportedly plays golf often and told reporters that “Life is fine,” in a 2019 interview.
After growing up in San Francisco, Simpson made a name for himself at the University of Southern California. In 1968, he won the Heisman Trophy, which honors college football’s best player. Simpson had a Hall of Fame-placing professional running back career, primarily with the Buffalo Bills from 1969 to 1977, and later used his superstardom to transition into acting and broadcast commentating roles after his retirement.
Simpson was one of the most famous football players of all time and has since become even higher-profile in infamy after the lengthy and highly publicized trial ended with his acquittal.
