NYC Mayor Eric Adams Says Rikers Island ‘Will Be Ready’ For Donald Trump If Judge Sends Him There

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said the city’s corrections officials “will be ready” to hold former President Donald Trump at the notorious Rikers Island prison, known as one of the worst in the United States, should the judge in his hush-money case send him there. 

“Our amazing [Department of Corrections Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie], she is prepared for whatever comes on Rikers Island,” Adams said when asked about Trump’s possible incarceration. “I’m pretty sure she would be prepared to manage and deal with the situation.”

“As you see with Harvey Weinstein, we have to adjust,” Adams said, in reference to the Hollywood mogul who was held for medical treatment at Bellevue Hospital.

Adams acknowledged that while dealing with hypothetical situations is not ideal, the city’s law enforcement entities must be prepared for any possibility. Trump currently faces trial in Manhattan on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to alleged hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The former president has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.

Judge Juan Merchan fined Trump an additional $1,000 for violating a gag order by discussing jurors, in addition to the $9,000 fine imposed last week. “The last thing I want to do is put you in jail,” Merchan told the former president. “You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president as well.”

Merchan continued, “The magnitude of such a decision is not lost on me. But at the end of the day, I have a job to do.” He told Trump that his “continued, willful violations” of the gag order would “constitute a direct attack on the rule of law. I cannot allow that to continue.”

Trump said after court that he would welcome jail time. “I’ll give that sacrifice any day,” he said.

Trump has frequently appeared to be sleeping in the trial, but the former president assured the he is just “resting his beautiful blue eyes.”
