NTSB Intern Fired: Volunteer Confirmed Fake Asiana Flight 214 Pilots Names To KTVU

The National Transportation Safety Board intern who confirmed the fake and offensive names of the Asiana Flight 214 pilots, whose plane crashed into San Francisco International airport on June 6, to a Bay Area TV station has been fired.

Over the weekend, news anchor for KTVU in Oakland, Calif., Tori Campbell, listed off the following names while reading her teleprompter: Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk and Bang Ding Ow. Campbell finished the segment without realizing the offensive phonetic phrases she had read. Later on in the newscast, she acknowledged the mistake, blaming the error on the NTSB official who had confirmed them.

After the clip of the broadcast became viral, sparking outrage for the racist false names and shoddy reporting, the NTSB formally apologized. In their contrite statement, the NTSB explained, “Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.”

On Saturday, the NTSB had further stated, “Appropriate action will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.” By Monday, it was confirmed that the intern had been fired by BuzzFeed. KTVU had also stated that they'd be reviewing the incident to ensure nothing similar happens in the future, but has not announced any firings.
