Noor Salman, the wife of Orlando shooter Omar Mateen, has been opening up to authorities in the aftermath of Mateen’s senseless massacre that has so far killed 50 people who were partying at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando.
Salman, 30, has reportedly told police that she was aware of Mateen’s desire to commit a jihadist attack. She apparently not only drove with him to Pulse nightclub ahead of his attack to scout it out, but also may have been with him while he purchased ammunition, reported CNN. Despite these assertions, Salman has maintained that she did not know that Mateen was going to shoot up Pulse in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“It appears she has some knowledge of what was going on, visiting some of the other sites. We don’t know whether she was involved and knew about the purchase of the guns, which took place only about a week before the attack,” Maine Sen. Angus King, a Senate Intelligence Committee member briefed on the investigation, told CNN. “But she definitely is, I guess you would say, a person of interest right now and appears to be cooperating and can provide us with some important information on who this guy is, what his motivations were and what his plans were.”
FBI investigators are not looking at Salman as a co-conspirator in the mass shooting. However, it remains a possibility that she will be charged for failing to inform law enforcement of Mateen’s intentions.
Salman is Mateen’s second wife, marrying him in 2011. Together, the two lived in Fort Pierce, Fla., where they had been raising a 3-year-old son. Prior to marrying Mateen, Salman, who is Palestinian, had lived in Northern California where she was born and raised.
