Nintendo Switch Is The True Identity Of The NX

Nintendo’s new hardware was first announced over a year ago under its codename, the NX. New details trickled out every now and then, and rumors pertaining to the mysterious system were plentiful.

But all of that speculation has come to a close today, as Nintendo formally revealed the NX with a three-minute video.

Here we go, it’s the Nintendo Switch! Up until now, Nintendo supported two concurrent markets, handheld and console, and now the Switch will blend them into one entity.

When you’re home, you can keep the Nintendo Switch on its Nintendo Switch Dock, which will allow you to enjoy your games on your TV. Removing the Switch from its Dock will seamlessly switch your gameplay over to the Switch’s screen, allowing you to enjoy your game on the go.

The Switch’s two detachable Joy-Con controllers can be utilized in different ways; you can use both controllers or you can hand one over to a friend for some multiplayer action. A Joy-Con Grip accessory can connect the two Joy-Con controllers together to simulate a standard controller, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller will be available for those who prefer an ordinary option. Naturally, gamers can link their Switches together for some multiplayer fun.

Speaking of the games, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was visible in the presentation, as were what seemed to be enhanced ports of Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. Bethesda’s Skyrim is coming to the Switch, too, as is a basketball game. We even had a brief glance at a new 3D Super Mario title. Moreover, while it wasn’t spotted in this teaser, we know the next big Sonic game is coming to the Switch.

IGN was able to learn a few new details, including the unsurprising tidbit that the Switch will maintain compatibility with Nintendo’s amiibo toy line.

Here’s the list of companies that have pledged to support the Nintendo Switch:

Reggie Fils-Aimé, Nintendo of America’s President and COO, had this to say on his company’s next system:

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like. It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

So, yeah, Nintendo finally unveiled the NX. It seems like a lot of the speculation concerning the system panned out. We need to see more of the Switch, but I thought it was a solid reveal and I’m eager to see more of the games these talented studios have been working on.
