Vampire Diaries costars and former couple Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder had the awkward task of accepting a trophy together at the 2014 People’s Choice Awards.
Dobrev and Somerhalder, while splitting up in their personal lives, have seen the romance between their Vampire Diaries characters heat up over the last season. Fans of the show decided that the steaminess between Elena and Damon was still believable enough to get them the Favorite On-Screen Chemistry award.
When they first went up to accept the award, the two actors joked about how long they’ve been on the show and the crazy dynamic between their characters. “Wow, this is crazy. Can you believe this is almost five years in the making?" Somerhalder asked the audience.
“Right, yeah. But you know, I think what’s crazier, though, Ian, is at the beginning of the show, Elena actually hated Damon," Dobrev joked about the early days on the hit CW vampire show.
“You were hooking up with my brother," Somerhalder continued.
"Well, you killed my brother," joked Dobrev.
“Then eventually she fell in love with me," Somerhalder bragged.
“And then we started dating on the show," Dobrev explained.

And then the pair turned their quips away from the characters and on to the romance that grew off set.
"And then we started dating in real life," Somerhalder said.
“And then we broke up in real-life," Dobrev admitted.
“And our characters are still dating on the show," Somerhalder added. Then Dobrev joked, “It’s a good thing it’s not awkward … [pause] … Well, it’s a good thing we have chemistry.”
Dobrev and Somerhalder dated for three years before breaking up in May 2013. “[Dobrev and Somerhalder] will continue to work together and remain best friends,” an insider told Us Weekly at the time, “which is where the relationship started."
