Nikki Reed & Ian Somerhalder At The ‘ELLE’ Women in Hollywood Awards

Couple Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder attended the annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards over the weekend.

Reed wore a Victoria Beckham dress for the occasion, which celebrated powerful women in Hollywood. The little dress featured classy cutouts around her midriff, and Reed finished off the look with Sophia Webster shoes, John Hardy rings, Jenny Bird bracelet and earrings, and an Edie Parker clutch.

The eight women were honored at the awards night – Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie, Riley Keough, Kathleen Kennedy, Cicely Tyson, Jessica Chastain, Laura Dern, and Tessa Thompson. Reed, in an Instagram post, was particularly fond of Dern. “Thank you @elleusa for bringing together such an amazing group of women for an inspiring evening of fearless and passionate storytelling. Thank you for encouraging a strong and honest dialogue time and time again. These conversations need to be had, not just for women in hollywood but for women around the world,” Reed wrote. “It is no secret that the media has always had a massive influence on the way women are viewed, and the way they view themselves, so as we shatter paradigms in this arena the ripples will undoubtedly be felt beyond our industry. And as the women who were honored last night graciously accepted the responsibility, we were reminded again that it is our duty to talk about this until there is real change. Thank you to the women who shared their personal stories, for the rawness and vulnerability you so openly offered. As the great Laura Dern said last night ‘it used to be every man for himself, now it’s every woman for each other’ ps Laura, I am your biggest fan…”

Reed and Somerhalder recently had a daughter, Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder. The couple found themselves in hot water when they joked about birth control on a podcast. “We decided that we wanted to have children together, and it was just time,” Somerhalder, 38, said. “But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn’t realize that I was going to go in her purse and take out her birth control.”

Many women were upset and spoke out, saying that Reed hadn’t consented to her own pregnancy. She immediately shut down these allegations. “‘Unconsented’ bulls–t is you speaking on my behalf in a story admittedly taken out of context for the purpose of stirring up drama WITHOUT my approval,” Reed fired. “Don’t talk about consent to me. And lastly, how dare you try to cast a dark shadow over one of the happiest most memorable days of my life — you’re not only disrespecting me but my baby.”

The couple later apologized for the joke and the reaction with a joint statement. “We never expected a lighthearted interview we did poking fun at EACH OTHER and how WE chose together to get pregnant, a goofy moment in Barcelona with our two best friends and the anticipation of the start of our journey together as we went from two to three, to turn into something representing a very serious matter,” they wrote. “However, if this somehow sheds light on a topic that definitely needs mainstream attention, then we are grateful for the unintended consequence. It’s a shame that outlets chose this as their way into a very serious discussion, as we are certainly not qualified to be the faces of this topic. We are two happily married people who chose TOGETHER to have a baby. The end. Love, Nikki and Ian.”
