Babygirl director Halina Reijn accepted Nicole Kidman‘s best actress award at the Venice Film Festival after the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.
At the festival on Saturday, Reijn announced in a statement made by Kidman that she left the awards ceremony early after hearing about the loss of her mother.
Kidman won the award for best actress for her role in Babygirl. While she was not in attendance to receive her award, her statement dedicated the award to her mother and stated that she was shocked to hear about her death.
“I’m in shock, and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her,” she said. “She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me.”
Addressing the audience, Reijn concluded the actress’s words with, “We love you all, Nicole.”
Kidman had previously revealed that her mother’s health had been declining in January 2022 but did not deliver further information regarding the matter.
In 2020, the Big Little Lies star told the Sydney Morning Herald that her mother played a huge role in sparking her career and success.
“She’s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I’ve always wanted to please her,” she said. “But she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths.”
