Actor Nicolas Cage has been sued by his ex-wife following their adult son’s physical attack on her last year.
Christina Fulton, 57, claimed that Cage had ignored signs of mental health issues in their son, Weston Coppola Cage, 34, and enabled Weston’s emotional ramp-up to the incident. She is suing Cage, 61, for negligence and Weston for assault and battery.
Weston has pleaded not guilty to both charges. An attorney for Cage responded, “The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous…Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”
The physical altercation between Fulton and Weston occurred on April 28, 2024. Fulton chalked up her son’s behavior to a “mental health crisis,” saying she received multiple emergency texts from Weston’s friends. When she arrived, Weston assaulted her multiple times in a “manic rage,” leaving her with a concussion, numerous contusions, throat and neck injuries, dental trauma, tinnitus, abdominal trauma and PTSD.
In July 2024, Weston was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Fulton emphasized that it is essential Weston “receives the help he desperately needs.”
Fulton’s lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County, accused Cage of not taking the necessary steps to address Weston’s mental illness, stating, “Weston has a long history of mental and psychological disorder and a history of committing violent assault and battery and harming numerous individuals…Nicolas has been aware of Weston’s history and nevertheless failed to take action to prevent Weston from committing acts of violence and harming others.”
Fulton further expressed her anger that Cage had continually bailed Weston out of jail and failed to address Weston’s “reckless” lifestyle with “necessary psychiatric” help.
“Nicolas knew or should have known that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others, including Plaintiff, based on his documented history of violent assaults, substance abuse, and mental instability,” the lawsuit stated.
