Rapper Nicki Minaj performed for a planned festival in Angola, ignoring pleas from a human rights group to not work there.
Minaj was set to headline a festival that was brought to life by communications company Unitel, which is controlled reportedly by Angolan president Jose Eduardo Dos Santos. This performance comes after the human rights group Human Rights Foundation wrote an open letter to Minaj, pleading with her to not perform on the grounds of “the human rights crisis in Angola.” They further state in the letter that there are limitations of freedoms and journalists are under tight control and frequently detained for their actions in criticizing the regime. Another haunting quote from the letter is the amount of wealth the Dos Santos family has, claiming the family net worth set at $3.5 billion while an average Angolan will barely get $2 per day.
On her Instagram page, numerous photos show her time in the country and that she was enjoying herself throughout her time spent in Angola. It was also reported that fans were singing along to her music and waiting for her at the report in order to show their undying support for the rapper.
