Nicki Minaj, who publicly reconciled with Taylor Swift at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, called out Miley Cyrus over recent comments about her.
In a recent interview, MTV Video Music Awards host Cyrus was asked about Minaj’s series of tweets on racism in the music industry after her music video for “Anaconda” was arguably snubbed in the Video of the Year category. Cyrus suggested that Minaj could have approached the issue in a more “polite” while talking to The New York Times.
“If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement,” Cyrus told the Times. “But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. And it’s not anger like, ‘Guys, I’m frustrated about some things that are a bigger issue.’ You made it about you. Not to sound like a b—h, but that’s like, ‘Eh, I didn’t get my V.M.A.’”
“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite,” Cyrus added. “I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about.”
Though Minaj hadn’t reacted on social media after the controversial interview was first published, she decided to take the opportunity to confront the former Disney star in person Sunday night. After accepting the moonman for Best Female Video, Minaj re-introduced Cyrus by calling her out.
“Now, back to this b—h that had a lot to say about me in the press,” Minaj said. “Miley, what’s good?”
After a brief pause, Cyrus replied, “We’re all in this industry. We all do interviews. We all know how they manipulate s–t. Nicki, congratu-f–kinglations.”
When the camera panned back to Minaj, whose mic had been turned off, she was seen mouthing, “Don’t play with me, b—h!”
Although some people thought that the exchange was a pre-planned bit between the two, insiders have said that there was nothing fake about the tense moment. And, Cyrus’ reaction to Minaj’s remark seems to prove that she was not prepared to defend herself on the VMA stage.
