Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich has said singer Madonna should be arrested for making a violent comment about the White House on Saturday’s Women’s March on Washington.
Madonna told the crowd that she has “thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.” In an interview with Fox & Friends, Gingrich accused Madonna of being part of “an emerging left-wing fascism.”
Madonna explained her comment on Instagram on Sunday, saying there are two ways to respond to Donald Trump‘s election – with either hope or anger. She expressed that she wishes to create change by spreading love. “[I]t’s important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety rather than one phrase taken wildly out of context,” she wrote. The singer claims she “spoke in metaphor” and took the “opportunity to encourage women and all marginalized people to not fall into despair but rather to come together and use it as a starting point for unity and to create positive change in the world.”
In response to the post, Gingrich claimed that Madonna only said that because “she now understands she’s at risk.” Madonna has yet to comment to Gingrich’s remarks specifically.
