Margot Robbie has been all over the map with new roles in Amsterdam, the upcoming Babylon and the much-hyped Barbie movie releasing next year. Unfortunately, not all of her films are getting the green light, and Robbie said in a recent interview that Disney has moved on from plans to make a female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean film starring her.

Robbie told Vanity Fair the idea first came up “ages ago, to have more of a female led—not totally female led, but just a different kind of story— which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Robbie proved herself to be more than capable in action scenes with her turn as Harley Quinn in several DC films including Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. The screenwriter of Birds of Prey, Christina Hodson, was attached to write this new film before it fell through.

Hodson has had unusually bad luck with her writing projects, with her also having sole screenplay credits on the Warner Bros. films Batgirl and The Flash.

Batgirl was canned after being nearly out of post-production back in August, and The Flash is currently in release limbo due to the ongoing legal issues surrounding its star Ezra Miller.

Along with Robbie’s Pirate’s project, the film Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is also in development with the Chernobyl scribe Craig Mazin attached as writer along with Ted Elliott. There haven’t been many updates, though the project is still in early writing phases as Mazin and Elliott are the latest team to take over on scripting duties from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, but that was back in 2019.

Pre-production can be a very lengthy process and these huge studios certainly don’t rush anything. They could have even quietly canceled it already and we’d be none the wiser. Given the fact that the former Jack Sparrow Johnny Depp has been all over the news due to his defamation trial with Amber Heard, there could be controversy in bringing him back.

But since Robbie’s project was canned, they could just be preparing to all-in on Depp as well. This would be slightly unfortunate since some original characters and a refreshing story could have really taken the languishing series in a more interesting direction.
