Comedy pros Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell lit up the stage with a twisted comedy skit before they presented an award at the Golden Globes.
Even before the actors started speaking, the crowd was giggling. The award was for the best animated feature, and the pair started off by asking each other if they’d seen any animated films. “It was kind of a big deal. I was six years old and my dad took me to see Fantasia, it was astounding – the music, the spectacle of the whole thing,” Carell began, seeming almost like a humble-brag until his face started to drop. “It was kind of a life-changing experience. And as we were leaving the theater, there standing in the lobby was my mom. And that was the moment she told my dad that she wanted a divorce. I never saw my father again after that day. ‘Fantasia’ day.”
The crowd guffawed, as this was the first real darkly comedic moment at the relatively tame award show. Wiig was stone-faced when he asked about her. “Bambi,” she said. “March 14, 1981. It was the same day we had to put our dogs down. Three of them, little Jack, Janet, and Chrissy. My grandpa thought it would be fun to go to the movie, take our minds off it but then, you know, Bambi’s mom.”
The audience loved the strange-but-hilarious moment. Then, always trying to one-up, Wiig continued, “And also that was the last day I saw my grandpa, he disappeared. And I didn’t speak for two years.”
Then teary-eyed and stone-faced, the comedians read the nominees and awarded Zootopia with the Golden Globe.
