The comedian Kathy Griffin wrote, “Ugh. So close” on Twitter in response to news that a plane with Donald Trump on board had to make an emergency landing.
The plane was set for a short flight from New Orleans to Palm Beach, Florida, the site of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. However, the plane suffered engine failure early in the journey over the Gulf of Mexico, necessitating a quick return to the departure city. Trump was traveling with assistance from a donor, and after he landed safely he made the journey on another donor’s plane.
Griffin’s Tweet comes years after she faced heavy backlash and a career slump in response to her posing with a model of Trump’s decapitated head in a photoshoot by provocative photographer Tyler Shields. Trump quickly responded saying she should “be ashamed of herself,” and drove the criticism up to a fever pitch until Griffin apologized on social media.
The comedian later said she regretted making the apology, and that she was subject to repeated anonymous death threats and harassment after Trump responded. She said on The View, “I didn’t rape anybody. I didn’t assault anybody. I didn’t get a DUI. I mean, my god, there are celebrities that f––king kill people.”
Along with the pressure of trying to get her career back on the rails, Griffin also dealt with a terrifying lung cancer diagnosis and had to get a lung removed because of it. She recently confirmed in an appearance with Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the procedure was a success and she is “cancer-free.”
