The January 6 Committee began its hearings on the now infamous Capital Riots, which broke out in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral college victory in the 2020 Presidential election in favor of then-President Donald Trump.
There were several bombshell reveals during the Thursday night hearing regarding Trump’s conduct, including pre-recorded interviews with former administration officials like Bill Barr, and his daughter Ivanka Trump.
In Barr’s video, he explained that one of the reasons he left his position as Attorney General in December 2020 was because he couldn’t stand behind Trump’s attempts to thwart the election, though he didn’t say that publicly at the time. “I made it clear that I did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff, which I told the President was bullsh––,” Barr said.
He also added, “I observed, I think it was on December 1 that, ‘You can’t live in a world where the incumbent administration stays in power based on its view, unsupported by specific evidence, that there was fraud in the election.” You can watch Barr’s full comments below.
Ivanka testified that when Barr told her there was no evidence of election fraud like her father was claiming, “It affected my perspective. I respect Attorney General Barr, so I accepted what he was saying.”
Trump attempted to discredit Barr and Ivanka in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. “Ivanka Trump was not involved in looking at or studying, Election results. She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr and his position as Attorney General (he sucked),” Trump wrote in full.
Rep Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), also announced that several GOP members of Congress requested Presidential pardons from Trump relating to their involvement in the riot after the January 6 attacks. She named Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania), as one of the congressmen who sought a pardon, but said that “multiple” more members did without naming more names.
This was only a sampling of the chilling facts that were revealed just on the first day of the hearings. In a statement before she began presenting evidence, Cheney said Trump “summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.”
“On the morning of January 6, President Donald Trump’s intention was to remain President of the United States despite the lawful outcome of the 2020 election, and in violation of his constitutional obligation to relinquish power,” Cheney put it clearly. She said that the hearings will display evidence illustrating the “seven-part plan” Trump had to overturn the election.
