We’re getting the first glimpse of Harry Styles playing Tom, a closeted gay police officer in 1950s England when homosexuality was illegal, with stills from the new film My Policeman. It premieres in theaters on October 21 and then on Amazon Prime Video on November 4.
Styles will be acting alongside Emma Corrin and David Dawson. Corrin will be playing Marion, Tom’s wife, and Dawson will be playing museum curator Patrick, who Styles develops romantic feelings for.
The film’s director, Michael Grandage, described Tom as “a character who is confused,” and added “it’s made more problematic by the fact that he’s a policeman, and he’s in a career that’s about upholding the law.
Grandage also spoke highly of working with Styles, saying his relatively little acting experience helped him for this role because “he hasn’t developed the ability to work out tricks or even lie. He can only do it truthfully and as he knows it.”
The film is based on the 2012 novel by Bethan Roberts. Styles is playing Tom from his younger years, and the film will jump between a younger and older timeline with the same three characters.
This will be a big year for Styles’ budding film career. Along with this role, he has a major part in the anticipated film Don’t Worry Darling, which was directed by his girlfriend Olivia Wilde and also stars Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan.
