‘Game of Thrones’ To Celebrate Its 10-Year Anniversary With Month-Long Charity Event

On April 17, the immensely popular fantasy television series on HBO Game of Thrones will celebrate its ten-year anniversary. The series was created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and is based off the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. It ran for eight seasons from April 2011 to May 2019. Despite the negative reaction to the eighth and final season, Game of Thrones has proven itself to be a landmark in television and continues to be influential in pop-culture even long after its divisive ending. On Monday, the streaming service HBO Max provided a spotlight page that showcases the show’s most popular episodes, behind the scenes documentaries and suggestions for other HBO shows to watch such as His Dark Materials and Watchmen.

On April 10, HBO will host an event titled “#MaraThrone” where they will air every episode from the first season of Game of Thrones. Afterwards, the viewer will be challenged to marathon every single episode from the rest of the series. Fans will be receiving encouragement during the event by several cast members from the show. Doing so will also provide support for a handful of charities, including Conservation International, Royal Mencap Society, the Trevor Project, National Urban League, UNICEF, World Central Kitchen, Women for Women International, International Rescue Committee and FilmAid International. HBO also plans to reward three lucky couples who got married in a Game of Thrones-themed wedding or had it in a specific location where the show was filmed with custom chalices, branded barrels of wine or elaborate Game of Thrones-related cakes. Regular fans will also have a chance to get new Game of Thrones merchandise, which items such as faberge eggs, special beers, special edition Funko Pop figures and DVD and Blu-ray box sets for every season of the show.
